Q: What is DFM technology?
A: DFM, as it is popularly known, stands for "Design for Manufacturability ". DFM technology developed by Geometric, is a revolutionary technology framework for designers that facilitates upstream manufacturability validation and identification of areas of a design that are difficult, expensive, or impossible to machine. Leveraging years of manufacturing expertise, DFM is engineered to help advice the designer on common problems faced in the manufacturing process.

Q: What is DFMPro?
A:DFMPro is ready-to-use product developed using DFM framework. Currently, DFMPro is available as add-on on SolidWorks CAD system.

DFMPro enables faster, less costly and more optimized product development, as well as greater in-depth examination of product manufacturability than is possible with the most intensive iterative design process. Complete integration with SolidWorks allows designers to perform complete design checks and analysis directly from their SolidWorks session.

DFMPro provides a sophisticated environment for designers to custom-configure the pre-built manufacturing rules and hence the knowledge. Providing simple, accurate and robust design analysis based on manufacturability related rules, DFMPro ultimately leads to better products by giving designers the confidence and capabilities to build superior models. Designers are free to innovate with the assurance that they won't pass costly mistakes in the manufacturing process.

Q: What are the key benefits of DFMPro?
A: A typical organization follows and maintains its own set of design review checklists based on their best manufacturing practices. Conducting a manual design review against the checklist is a cumbersome task which often leads to errors. DFMPro provides the route to error-free results while conducting the reviews. It provides the following key benefits:

  • Allows early prediction and prevention of production problems or manufacturing inefficiencies
  • Assists evolution of optimal design and product quality
  • Facilitates concurrent design of product and process
  • Decreases lead-time by reducing backtracking and design iterations

Q: What are the platforms required?
A: DFMPro works with Microsoft Windows XP or higher. It needs SolidWorks 2007 or SolidWorks 2008 version as a pre-requisite.

Note: There are some rules that use a specific technology from SolidWorks 2008. These will not be available while running on the 2007 version.

Q: How is DFMPro licensed?
A: DFMPro is available both with Node locked license and Floating license. Please feel free to Contact Us for more details.

Q: What are the specific rules supported by DFMPro?
A: The first version of DFMPro supports rules related to following manufacturing processes:

  • Milling
  • Turning and Mill-Turn
  • Sheet Metal Fabrication
  • Tolerance related (using SolidWorks SWIFT tolerance related rules)*
  • Generic Rules (Rules related to part attributes like material)

* Available on SolidWorks 2008 version only

Q: Can I choose the specific rules which are applicable to my practice??
A: Yes. The rules in DFMPro may vary from user-to-user based on their set of practice. In this situation, you can configure DFMPro to run only selected checks by selecting and enabling only those relevant rules in DFMPro Rules Manager application.

Q: When I run DFMPro, can I be 100% assured of an error-free design?
A: The tool may under-report or over-report in exceptional cases not covered by existing algorithms. In addition, DFMPro may not always be able to analyze complete geometry of the part. But it informs the user about its coverage of the model geometry. If there is any part of the geometry which DFMPro is unable to analyze, it informs the user by highlighting that geometry in graphical interface so that manual review can be done. Please refer to limitations section of the help files to know existing limitations in more details.

Q: While running DFMPro, what should I do when errors that are reported as not genuine errors?
A: Some errors are context specific. i.e. in a certain context, violation of some rules may not be considered as an error. DFMPro gives the user the option to override such instances of violation by ignoring them. It may also be a good practice to check if parameters that are configured for such rules are correct, or need any modification of rules as they may need to be reviewed frequently.

Q: A considerable amount of time is taken when DFMPro runs on complex parts. Is there any way to improve the response time?
A: DFMPro needs to do an in-depth analysis of the geometry to detect various rules violation and this process can be quite time consuming for complex parts. The users can try to reduce the time by running rules selectively by changing configuration through DFMPro Rule Manager instead of running all the rules all the time.
